Catalan B2: Reported speech · Grammar

After a verb in the past, tenses step back: present → imperfet, perifràstic or perfet → plusquamperfet, future → conditional, and a command becomes que + imperfect subjunctive. «Estic cansat» → Va dir que estava cansat. «Vine» → Em va dir que vingués. Yes/no questions take si: Em va preguntar si tenia gana. Time words shift too: demà → l’endemà, ahir → el dia abans.

• Em va dir que arribaria l’endemà. — He told me he would arrive the next day.
• Em va preguntar si tenia gana. — She asked me if I was hungry.
• Segons ell, tot va bé. — According to him, everything is fine.
• Va reconèixer que havia mentit. — He admitted he had lied.
