Catalan possessives take the article and agree with the thing owned: el meu germà, la meva germana, els meus pares, les meves cosines. el seu, la seva mean his, her, its, their and your (vostè). With close family, speech often uses the short forms: mon pare, ma mare.

• la mare — mother
• el pare — father
• el germà — brother
• la germana — sister
• el fill — son
• la filla — daughter
• pares — parents
• avis — grandparents

• Aquest és el meu germà. — This is my brother.
• Tens germans? — Do you have any brothers or sisters?
• La meva mare es diu Montse. — My mother’s name is Montse.
• Diumenge dinem a casa dels avis. — On Sunday we have lunch at my grandparents’.
