German B1: Adjective endings · Phrases
Before a noun, adjectives take endings. After der/die/das they are -e in the nominative singular and mostly -en elsewhere: der alte Mann, mit dem alten Mann. After ein the adjective shows the gender itself: ein alter Mann, ein altes Haus, eine alte Stadt. With no article at all, it takes the ending the article would have had: kalter Kaffee, frische Milch.
