German C1: Verb-noun phrases · Grammar

Formal German often uses a noun with a fairly empty verb instead of a single verb: eine Entscheidung treffen (decide), in Frage stellen (question), zur Verfügung stehen (be available), Kritik üben (criticise), in Kraft treten (come into force), zum Ausdruck bringen (express). The verb is fixed, so learn each pair as a whole.
