German B2: Two-part connectors · Grammar

Some connectors come in pairs: sowohl … als auch (both … and), weder … noch (neither … nor), entweder … oder (either … or), nicht nur … sondern auch (not only … but also), zwar … aber (it’s true … but). With je … desto (the more … the more), the verb goes last after je: Je mehr ich lerne, desto besser verstehe ich.

• sondern — but rather
• außerdem — besides, moreover
• allerdings — however, mind you
• stattdessen — instead

• Das Hotel war zwar teuer, aber sehr schön. — The hotel was expensive, it’s true, but very nice.
• Ich habe weder Zeit noch Lust. — I have neither the time nor the inclination.
• Je früher, desto besser. — The sooner, the better.
• Sie spricht nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Japanisch. — She speaks not only German but also Japanese.
