German C1: Modal particles · Grammar

Small words like doch, ja, mal, halt, eben and wohl add tone rather than meaning. ja: something both sides know (Das ist ja toll!). doch: contradiction or urging (Komm doch mit!). mal: softens a request (Schau mal!). halt / eben: that’s just how it is (Das ist halt so). wohl: a guess (Er ist wohl krank). etwa in a question: a worried “surely not?”.

• halt — just, simply (resigned)
• eben — just, precisely
• wohl — probably, I suppose
• etwa — surely not? (in questions)
• schon — it’ll be fine, surely

• Das ist halt so. — That’s just how it is.
• Ruf mich doch mal an! — Give me a call sometime!
• Das weißt du ja. — You know that, of course.
• Das wird schon klappen. — It’ll work out, don’t worry.
