German C2: One verb, two meanings: separable or not · Phrases

Some prefixes (um-, über-, durch-, unter-, wieder-) can be separable or not, and the meaning changes with them. Stressed and separable, the meaning is literal: Er fährt den Baum um (knocks it down). Unstressed and inseparable, it is figurative: Er umfährt den Stau (drives around it). The participle shows which: umgefahren vs umfahren, übergesetzt vs übersetzt.
