German C1: Supposing & reporting with modal verbs · Grammar

Modal verbs can show how sure the speaker is, or where a claim comes from. muss: almost certain (Er muss zu Hause sein). dürfte: probable (Das dürfte stimmen). kann / könnte: possible. soll: others say so (Er soll sehr reich sein – he is said to be). will: the subject claims it (Sie will ihn nie gesehen haben). For the past: muss … gewesen sein, soll … gesagt haben.

• offenbar — evidently, apparently
• die Behauptung — claim
• der Zeuge — witness

• Sie soll eine neue Stelle haben. — She’s supposed to have a new job.
• Das dürfte kein Problem sein. — That shouldn’t be a problem.
• Er will alles allein gemacht haben. — He claims to have done it all by himself.
• Da muss ein Fehler passiert sein. — There must have been a mistake.
