Al contar lo que alguien dijo, los tiempos retroceden: "I’m tired" → She said she was tired; "I’ve finished" → He said he had finished; "I’ll call" → She said she would call. say no lleva complemento de persona y tell sí: She said that…, She told me that… Las preguntas pierden la inversión: She asked where I lived. Las órdenes van con to: She told us not to be late.

• admit — admitir
• deny — negar
• the next day — al día siguiente

• She said she would call later. — Dijo que llamaría más tarde.
• He told me to wait. — Me dijo que esperara.
• They asked if I was ready. — Preguntaron si estaba listo.
• He denied taking it. — Negó haberlo cogido.
