este for what is near me, ese for what is near you, aquel for what is far from both: este jersey, esa camisa, aquellos zapatos. Alone, they replace the noun: Quiero ese. Esto, eso and aquello mean this, that thing: ¿Qué es eso? Prices: ¿Cuánto cuesta? (one thing), ¿Cuánto cuestan? (several).
