Spanish A2: How things were: the imperfecto · Phrases

The imperfecto describes the past: habits, how things were, what was going on. -ar verbs: -aba, -abas, -aba, -ábamos, -abais, -aban (hablaba). -er and -ir verbs: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían (comía, vivía). Only three are irregular: ser → era, ir → iba, ver → veía. Cuando era pequeño, jugaba en la calle.

• a menudo — often
• antes — before, in the past
• jugar — to play
• era — I was, it was
• tenía — I had
• mientras — while

• De pequeño vivía en Granada. — As a child I lived in Granada.
• ¿Qué tiempo hacía? — What was the weather like?
• Antes aquí había un cine. — There used to be a cinema here.
• Mientras cocinaba, escuchaba la radio. — While I was cooking I listened to the radio.
