Spanish B1: Indefinido or imperfecto? · Phrases
In a story, the pretérito indefinido moves the action forward: finished events (llegué, llamó, salimos). The imperfecto paints the background: the scene, habits, what was going on (llovía, estaba cansado). Together: Dormía cuando sonó el teléfono. Words like ayer, el lunes or de repente usually go with the indefinido.
