Spanish C1: Nuances: the small words of spoken Spanish · Words

Small words change the tone. pues starts an answer or a thought (Pues no sé). vaya shows surprise or disappointment (¡Vaya!, vaya día). venga urges or agrees (¡Venga, vamos!). hombre and mujer soften (Hombre, no es para tanto). o sea explains (I mean). es que gives an excuse (Es que no tengo tiempo). ¿no? asks for agreement.

• es que — the thing is
• en plan — like (colloquial)
• ¿no? — right?, isn’t it?

• Hombre, no es para tanto. — Come on, it’s not that bad.
• Es que no tengo tiempo. — The thing is, I don’t have time.
• Venga, nos vemos mañana. — OK, see you tomorrow.
