Spanish C1: Formal register · Phrases

Formal Spanish uses usted, the conditional and the imperfect for politeness (Quería pedirle…, ¿Podría…?), and set phrases in writing: Le escribo para…, Le ruego que…, Adjunto le envío… Letters open with Estimado señor or Estimada señora, and close with Atentamente or Un cordial saludo. Avoid tú, colloquial words and contractions of thought like «o sea».

• un cordial saludo — kind regards
• la solicitud — request, application
• el plazo — deadline, time limit
• la disposición — disposal
• convenir — to suit, to be advisable

• Me pongo en contacto con usted para informarle. — I am writing to inform you.
• Quedo a su disposición. — I remain at your disposal.
• ¿Le vendría bien el lunes? — Would Monday suit you?
• Atentamente, Laura García. — Yours faithfully, Laura García.
