French A1: Getting around · Grammar

à + le = au, à + les = aux; à la and à l’ do not change: je vais au cinéma, à la gare, à l’hôtel. Cities take à (j’habite à Paris); feminine countries, most of those ending in -e, take en (en France), masculine ones au (au Canada).

• la gare — train station
• la rue — street
• l' hôtel — hotel
• le métro — underground, metro
• l' arrêt — stop (bus, tram)
• à gauche — on the left
• à droite — on the right
• tout droit — straight on

• Où est la gare? — Where is the train station?
• Allez tout droit. — Go straight on.
• À quelle heure part le train? — What time does the train leave?
• C’est loin? — Is it far?
