en + the present participle (the nous form minus -ons, plus -ant) says how or when, by the same subject: Il chante en cuisinant. J’ai appris le français en écoutant la radio. Irregular: être → étant, avoir → ayant, savoir → sachant. tout en stresses a contrast: Il sourit tout en étant triste.

- J’ai appris le français en regardant des films. — I learned French by watching films.

- Je me suis rendu compte de mon erreur en sortant. — I realised my mistake as I went out.
- Il a dit oui tout en pensant non. — He said yes while thinking no.
