French A2: How things were: the imparfait · Phrases

The imparfait describes the past: what used to happen, how things were, what was going on. Take the nous form of the present, drop -ons, add -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient: nous parlons → je parlais, nous finissons → je finissais. être is the one irregular stem: j’étais. Quand j’étais petit, je jouais au foot.
