French C2: Literary negation & the ne explétif · Words

Careful French has negations beyond ne… pas: ne… point (not at all, old-fashioned), ne… guère (hardly), ne… nullement (in no way), nul ne (no one). With cesser, oser, pouvoir and savoir, ne can stand alone: Je n’ose le dire. The ne explétif negates nothing: it appears after avant que, à moins que, de peur que, craindre que and in comparisons: Partez avant qu’il ne pleuve; Il est plus tard que je ne pensais.

• ne… point — not at all (literary)
• ne… nullement — in no way
• nul ne — no one
• avant que… ne — before (with ne explétif)
• à moins que… ne — unless
• de peur que… ne — for fear that
• je n’ose — I dare not

• Je crains qu’il ne soit trop tard. — I’m afraid it may be too late.
• Il n’en est nullement question. — That is out of the question.
• Je ne sais que faire. — I don’t know what to do.
• Elle n’a guère dormi. — She hardly slept.
