French B2: The passive · Words

être in the needed tense + participle, which agrees with the subject: La maison a été construite en 1900. The agent takes par (Le livre a été écrit par Camus), and de with feelings and states (Il est aimé de tous). Everyday French often avoids the passive with on or a reflexive: On a volé mon vélo. Ça se mange froid.

• Ce livre a été publié l’année dernière. — This book was published last year.
• On m’a volé mon vélo. — My bike was stolen.

• Ça ne se fait pas. — That isn’t done.
