French B2: If I had known: the past conditional · Words

For regrets about the past: si + plus-que-parfait, then the past conditional (avoir or être in the conditional + participle). Si j’avais su, je serais venu. The past conditional alone talks about what would have happened: J’aurais aimé te voir. The plus-que-parfait is the imparfait of avoir or être + participle: j’avais vu, elle était partie.

• Si j’avais su, je serais resté. — If I had known, I would have stayed.
• Tu aurais dû me le dire. — You should have told me.
• Heureusement, on est arrivés à temps. — Fortunately, we arrived in time.
• J’aurais aimé te voir. — I would have liked to see you.
