Italian C2: Small, big, nasty: -ino, -one, -accio · Words

Italian changes a word’s shade with suffixes. -ino and -etto make things small or dear (gattino, casetta); -one makes them big (librone, and a feminine noun often turns masculine: la porta → il portone); -accio makes them bad or ugly (tempaccio, parolaccia); -uccio is small and tender (caruccio). Some have become words of their own: il bottone, il fiammifero… so check the dictionary.
