Italian B1: The conditional & polite requests · Grammar

The conditional is the future stem + -ei, -esti, -ebbe, -emmo, -este, -ebbero: parlerei, prenderei, sarei, avrei, vorrei, potrei. It makes requests polite (Vorrei un caffè; Potrebbe aiutarmi?), gives advice with dovere (Dovresti riposare) and expresses wishes (Mi piacerebbe viaggiare).

• mi piacerebbe — I’d love to
• il consiglio — advice
• aiutare — to help
• volentieri — gladly
• gentilmente — kindly

• Vorrei prenotare un tavolo. — I’d like to book a table.
• Potresti chiudere la finestra? — Could you close the window?
• Al tuo posto, non lo farei. — If I were you, I wouldn’t do it.
• Mi piacerebbe molto. — I’d really like that.
