avere or essere + past participle: ho mangiato, sono andato. With essere the participle agrees with the subject like an adjective: Maria è tornata, siamo andati. Most verbs of movement and change take essere.

• fatto — done, made
• mangiato — eaten
• andato — gone
• visto — seen
• dormito — slept
• la settimana — week
• scorso — last (previous)

• Cosa hai fatto ieri? — What did you do yesterday?
• Ho dormito male. — I slept badly.
• Siamo andati al cinema. — We went to the cinema.
• La settimana scorsa ero a Roma. — Last week I was in Rome.
