Italian B2: If I had known: the third conditional · Words

For what did not happen: se + congiuntivo trapassato (avessi or fossi + participle), then the past conditional (avrei or sarei + participle): Se avessi saputo, sarei venuto. The past conditional also gives a future seen from the past: Ha detto che sarebbe arrivato alle otto. In casual speech you will also hear the imperfetto in both halves: Se lo sapevo, venivo.

• perdere — to miss, to lose
• purtroppo — unfortunately
• avvisare — to let someone know
• in tempo — in time
• pentirsi — to be sorry, to repent

• Se l'avessi saputo, te l'avrei detto. — If I’d known, I’d have told you.
• Avresti dovuto chiamarmi. — You should have called me.
• Purtroppo è troppo tardi. — Unfortunately it’s too late.
• Non me lo sarei mai aspettato. — I would never have expected it.
