Italian B2: Before the past: trapassato & futuro anteriore · Phrases

The trapassato prossimo (avevo or ero + participle) tells what had happened before another past moment: Quando sono arrivato, il treno era già partito. The futuro anteriore (avrò or sarò + participle) tells what will have happened: Appena avrò finito, ti chiamerò. It also guesses about the past: Avrà perso il treno (he must have missed the train).

• Quando siamo arrivati, il film era già cominciato. — When we arrived, the film had already started.
• Non ci ero mai stato prima. — I had never been there before.
• Appena avrò finito, ti chiamerò. — As soon as I’ve finished, I’ll call you.
• Sarà già partito. — He must have left already.
