Portuguese B1: Wishes & doubts: the present subjunctive · Grammar

After wishing, doubting, feeling and needing + que, Portuguese uses the conjuntivo: Quero que venhas. Espero que esteja bom tempo. Build it from the eu form of the present: falo → fale, como → coma, faço → faça. Irregular: ser → seja, estar → esteja, ir → vá, ter → tenha, haver → haja.

• desejar — to wish
• recear — to fear

• Espero que gostes. — I hope you like it.
• Oxalá não chova! — Let’s hope it doesn’t rain!
• Talvez ele venha amanhã. — Perhaps he’ll come tomorrow.
• É melhor que fiques em casa. — It’s better if you stay at home.
