Portuguese A1: Olá: ser & estar · Grammar

Portuguese has two verbs for “to be”. ser is for who or what something is (sou, és, é, somos, são); estar is for states and moods (estou, estás, está, estamos, estão). Sou português, but estou cansado.

• olá — hello
• obrigado — thank you
• por favor — please
• sim — yes
• não — no
• o homem — man
• a mulher — woman
• a criança — child

• Como estás? — How are you?
• Estou bem, obrigado. — I’m fine, thanks.
• Chamo-me Ana. — My name is Ana.
• Muito prazer! — Nice to meet you!
