Portuguese B1: Perfeito or imperfeito? · Grammar
The pretérito perfeito tells what happened, once and done: Ontem fui ao médico. The imperfeito sets the scene and tells what used to happen: Estava a chover e não havia ninguém. Together, the imperfeito is the background and the perfeito the event: Eu lia quando o telefone tocou.
