Formal Portuguese prefers nouns and set phrases to everyday verbs: proceder à análise (carry out the analysis), levar a cabo (accomplish), efetuar um pagamento (make a payment), tendo em conta (taking into account), no âmbito de (within the scope of), face a (in view of), mediante (upon), salvo (except).

• Face à situação, adiámos a reunião. — In view of the situation, we postponed the meeting.

• O estudo foi levado a cabo por três universidades. — The study was carried out by three universities.
• Tendo em conta o custo, não vale a pena. — Considering the cost, it isn’t worth it.
